“Την άρνησή σου την έκανα καράβι
που θα με ταξιδεύει στα χρόνια που θα ‘ρθουν.
Κυματάκι της θάλασσας που πάνω του θα χαιδεύομαι
Φωνούλα μέσα μου που τραγουδάει για αθωότητα.
Την άρνησή σου την έκανα στίχους ηχηρούς,
την έκανα στιγμή ολόκληρη γεμάτη από σένα,
ελπίδα ότι μπροστά μου θα σταθείς μια μέρα,
Κι εγώ,
ελεύθερη,
θα σου ψιθυρίζω την αλήθεια μας,
κι εσύ,
για πρώτη φορά,
θα την αποδέχεσαι.”

What gives these deceptively simple lines so much power? Perhaps it is the immediacy and sincerity of the feelings that the poet shares with us.
There is no self-conscious drama, no aesthetic affectation.The poems of Mina Xirogianni, just as the lovers’ ecstasy are always intermingled with awareness of mortality.
